The developments at Gruner + Jahr and RTL show once again how important it is to promote creative journalism and make it fit for the future. We are taking this as an opportunity to bring the most exciting cases from the journalism industry to Hamburg.

From journalism start-ups to magazine takeovers – at our Journalism Camp, you’ll get inspiration from the industry’s leading innovators. For two days, you are able to exchange ideas with creative minds, learn all about start-up potential in journalism, network with like-minded people and shape the journalism of the future together with us.

Who is the Journalism Camp for?

Our Journalism Camp is for all creative minds in journalism who are looking for guidance or inspiration to advance their own project. Whether management buyout, journalistic start-up, in-house product development or building your own personal brand. You’ll get input from experienced makers, ask questions and exchange ideas with each other.

Lena Marbacher is a freelance journalist, co-author of the Spiegel bestseller Unlearn Patriarchy, speaker and co-founder of Neue Narrative, a self-organized publishing house for content products around New Work and Business. The media company is founded in accountability ownership and is self-owned. Lena was previously a partner in a management consultancy and worked in organizational development for ten years.

Martin Wiens is co-founder of NN Publishing GmbH (Neue Narrative, 9 Spaces). He is trying to build a prototype for the publishing house of the future. Martin’s favorite thing to do is to design light-footed processes in which people can develop really good content collaboratively, egofree and efficiently.

Biography
Felix Rohrbeck is co-founder and editor-in-chief of the Hamburg-based media startup Flip, which researches sustainability and greenwashing. Before that, he was an editor in the economics department of DIE ZEIT, where he was involved in uncovering the Cum-Ex scandal. He has received numerous awards for his investigative research, elaborate reports and cross-media stories.

Pia Frey

Biography
Pia Frey is a Berlin-based entrepreneur and founder of the media startup “Opinary”, which works internationally with publishers and advertisers and enables users to express their opinions in articles. Before founding Opinary, Pia Frey worked at Axel Springer in digital product development at “Welt.” She has published a series of books and hosts the podcast “OMR Media”. She is among Forbes’ 30under30 (but is now Ü30) in the “Media” category.

Tristan Rodgers

Biography
Resident in Hamburg with Irish roots, works at Google where he supports publications in their digital transformation. In 2013, he founded MC1R the magazine for redheads, which was awarded by the Lead Academy in 2015 and has sold over 18,000 copies to date.

Biography
Sebastian Esser is a journalist and entrepreneur in Berlin. He is the founder of the membership-funded magazine Krautreporter and of Steady, a membership platform for independent publishers. Krautreporter was crowdfunded in 2014 and publishes a daily feature on the bigger picture in politics and society.

Before joining Steady as Managing Director, Tina Dingel was COO at Clue by Biowink, an internationally renowned women’s health app. With a doctorate in history, she has spent most of her career to date at PayPal, where she was most recently responsible for the EMEA region as Director Credit Product.

Holger Volland is on the Executive Board of brand eins Medien AG in Hamburg. As CEO since 2021, he is primarily responsible for the transformation and business development of the media company. Gabriele Fischer is co-founder and editor-in-chief of the business magazine brand eins. She studied politics and sociology, worked for Manager Magazin for ten years and developed the subsidiary magazine Econy there. In September 1999, together with investors and the former Econy team, she founded the business magazine brand eins, which is now published by the independent brand eins Medien AG.

Nikolaus Förster

Publisher & Managing Partner at Impulse Medien GmbH

Biography
Dr. Nikolaus Förster is one of Germany’s most distinguished business journalists and also an entrepreneur – a rare combination: In 2013, the editor-in-chief of the entrepreneurial magazine impulse took over the title, which was founded in 1980, from Gruner + Jahr as part of a management buyout and launched the publishing house in Hamburg. Nikolaus Förster, born in Aachen in 1968, trained as a journalist, earned his doctorate with a thesis on storytelling (“Die Wiederkehr des Erzählens”), and in 1999 was a member of the development editorial team at the “Financial Times Deutschland,” before becoming a reporter, head of commentary and department head at the business newspaper. In 2009 he became editor-in-chief of impulse, and since 2018 he has been publisher of the entrepreneurial magazine. Förster lives the impulse slogan “Do it!”: tackling things, developing new ideas and creating value – especially in the
exchange with other entrepreneurs.

Sophie Coe

Head of Social at informed

Biography
Sophie Coe is Head of Social Media at informed, a news curation app looking to change the way the we consume news and create a new stream of revenue for customers. She was previously Deputy Head of Social Media at The Telegraph where she worked across social media and podcasting to grow the newspaper’s community of young readers. Passionate about the way we consume fact-based news online, Sophie has a first class degree in Literature from Oxford University and began her career in marketing before making the move into journalism.

Olaya Argüeso Pérez

Biography
After a decade as a radio journalist in Spain focusing on business, Olaya Argüeso Pérez decided to focus on data journalism and graduated from the Lede Program at Columbia University in New York. In November 2019, she joined CORRECTIV as Editor-in-Chief, where she leads international research. In this role, she has coordinated the CumEx Files 2.0 or China Science Investigation in Germany. In 2021, she and her colleague Justus von Daniels were named Editor-in-Chief of the Year by the Medium Magazin.

Christian Heise

Head of Partnerships (News) – Central and Eastern Europe at Google

Biography
Christian leads Google’s news partnerships in Central and Eastern Europe. Before joining Google in May 2018, he supported the Digital News Innovation Fund to promote innovation in the European digital news sector. He earned his PhD at the Center for Digital Cultures at Leuphana University and previously worked for DIE ZEIT and DPA, among others.

Biography
Anna Behrend heads NDR Data, the data journalism team at Norddeutscher Rundfunk. The trained science journalist and graduate physicist likes to explore how new tools and technologies can be used to make even better journalism. She has seen how dynamically journalism is developing from a wide variety of perspectives – including her work at Zeit Online, Spiegel, NOZ/mh:n and rbb. For her data storytelling, she was awarded the Georg von Holtzbrinck Prize for Science Journalism in the Electronic Media category in 2021.

Biography
Jochen Wegner is editor-in-chief of ZEIT ONLINE and a member of the ZEIT editorial board. He is co-host of “Alles gesagt?”, one of the most listened to German podcasts. Wegner was “Editor-in-Chief of the Year,” “Digital Leader in Gold,” received the “Grimme Online Award,” the “Scoop Award” and the “German Podcast Prize”.

Petra Maier

Biography
Petra Maier has been team leader of the Google Web Stories project at SPIEGEL since May 2022. Before that, she was an editor in the Social Media department and in the Snapchat team. Her thematic focus includes psychology, mental health and interpersonal relationships. Maier studied media and communications in Augsburg (bachelor’s degree) and journalism and communications in Hamburg (master’s degree).

Leonid Klimov

Science editor, dekoder

Biography
Leonid A. Klimov has a PhD in cultural and literary studies, is a media manager and science editor at dekoder.org. There he coordinates the work of the academic Eastern Europe experts, conceives and produces the multimedia specials at the interface between science and journalism (Grimme Online Award 2021).

Solveig Gode

Business Editor & Podcast-Host, Business Insider Deutschland

Biography
Solveig Gode is podcast editor at Business Insider and host of the successful true-crime podcast “Power and Millions”. In the podcast, she uses her own research, interviews and original documents to roll up the most exciting crime cases from German business together with BI editor-in-chief Kayhan Özgenc. Solveig was selected as one of Germany’s “Top 30 to 30” business journalists by the magazine Der Wirtschaftsjournalist.

Celia Parbey

Editor in Chief, RosaMag

Biography
Celia Parbey is a Berlin-based scholar of African studies. She works as an editor for ZEIT ONLINE and freelances for various online and print magazines. She is also Editor in Chief of RosaMag, an online lifestyle magazine for Black FLINTA* in German-speaking countries. She writes on the topics: Colonial Continuities, Intersectionality, Feminism and Racism.

As program manager, Bruno is the contact person for the incubator Media Lift, Scout & Match, the Workspace Funding and the Journalism Camp. He studied political science and cultural studies in Leipzig as well as management, organization and culture at the University of St. Gallen. During his studies, he gained experience in public relations and marketing at a PR agency, Finanztip and the Executive School St. Gallen. After working for SAP and a digital agency, he most recently worked as an innovation scout for a Hamburg-based science platform.
